It’s been a very busy but exciting week at school. Our big 5,000-gallon rain tank was installed!
It will collect water off our big metal roof, and the water will be used to support our wildlife habitat.
I was giddy, to say the least — this project has been in the works for several months now, and it was so rewarding to finally get to the big day. And lots of kids got to watch the process. I have to say that it was very cool to see that tank in the sky.
There’s still some landscaping and painting and whatnot to do, but the tank itself is completely installed. Now we just need rain!
Nice color on that tank. It really blends in well, even being elephantile in size. Will there be a roof washer of some type?
No roof washer is currently in place. And we do like the color, though we’re probably going to have our students design a habitat scene to go on the tank, to be colorful and kid-friendly.
Bravo to your school and its designers for placing the tank front and center. It send the message that rainwater harvesting is important and not something that we need to hide away out of sight. Good job for teaching our youth this important lesson.
Here in the UK we are very concerned about bacterial contamination of rainwater. We restrict the size of tanks to reduce the retention time so that bacteria don’t get time to breed to dangerous levels and we also bury our tanks underground to prevent the water from getting too warm as bacteria breed more rapidly in warm water.
Here in the UK there are about 300 cases of Legionnaires disease evry year and these measures reduce the risk.
You really should consider adding a roof washer as bird faeces are not desirable in the rainwater.
VERY COOL! Amazing what you have accomplished in the school garden.
Neat! What school is that?
